The role of psychosis and clozapine load in excessive checking in treatment-resistant schizophrenia: longitudinal observational study.

A significant proportion of people with clozapine-treated schizophrenia develop 'checking' compulsions, a phenomenon yet to be understood. To use habit formation models developed in cognitive neuroscience to investigate the dynamic interplay between psychosis, clozapine dose and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS). Using the anonymised electronic records of a cohort of clozapine-treated patients, including longitudinal assessments of OCS and psychosis, we performed longitudinal multi-level mediation and multi-level moderation analyses to explore associations of psychosis with obsessiveness and excessive checking. Classic bivariate correlation tests were used to assess clozapine load and checking compulsions. The influence of specific genetic variants was tested in a subsample. A total of 196 clozapine-treated individuals and 459 face-to-face assessments were included. We found significant OCS to be common (37.9%), with checking being the most prevalent symptom. In mediation models, psychosis severity mediated checking behaviour indirectly by inducing obsessions (r = 0.07, 95% CI 0.04-0.09; P < 0.001). No direct effect of psychosis on checking was identified (r = -0.28, 95% CI -0.09 to 0.03; P = 0.340). After psychosis remission (n = 65), checking compulsions correlated with both clozapine plasma levels (r = 0.35; P = 0.004) and dose (r = 0.38; P = 0.002). None of the glutamatergic and serotonergic genetic variants were found to moderate the effect of psychosis on obsession and compulsion (SLC6A4, SLC1A1 and HTR2C) survived the multiple comparisons correction. We elucidated different phases of the complex interplay of psychosis and compulsions, which may inform clinicians' therapeutic decisions.

Lose yourself: feared self, emotion regulation, and obsessive-compulsive and eating disorder symptomatology

ABSTRACT Objectives Feared self refers to an individual’s “possible” self that has undesired qualities or characteristics and has been linked to obsessive compulsive symptoms. However, feared self may also relate to eating disorder pathology, given the importance of views of self in the disorder. Method This questionnaire-based study in a non-clinical sample (N = 238) examined whether a feared self would independently predict the symptom severity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders (ED), while controlling for potential comorbidity of the respective symptoms. A secondary aim was to examine whether emotion regulation moderated the relationship between a feared self and OCD symptoms and a feared self and ED symptoms. Results Feared self was a significant unique predictor of symptoms of both disorders. Emotion regulation was not found to significantly moderate the relationship between feared self and either OCD or ED symptoms, although emotion regulation was a significant independent predictor of the respective symptoms. Conclusions The study is one of the first to show that a feared self uniquely predicts ED symptoms, over-and-above coexisting OCD symptoms. As such, the results provide support for feared self as a potential transdiagnostic factor. Implications and limitations are discussed.

Work stress and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in nurses and office workers: a comparative study

Objectives. This study aims to compare the work stress and obsessive-compulsive symptoms of nurses and office workers and to determine the relationship between work stress and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Methods. A total of 127 nurses and 127 office workers participated in the cross-sectional study and comparative study. Data were collected using the perceived work stress scale and the Maudsley obsessive-compulsive inventory. Results. Nurses had higher work stress scores (p = 0.003) in general than office workers. In particular, nurses with a low (p < 0.039) and average (p < 0.007) economic status, nurses who had been employed for 1–10 years (p < 0.001) and nurses working 40 h per week (p < 0.042) had higher work stress scores than office workers. There was no difference (p > 0.05) between obsessive-compulsive symptom scores. There was a positive significant relationship (p < 0.001) between work stress and obsessive-compulsive symptom scores of nurses and office workers. Work stress explains 6.1% of the obsessive-compulsive symptoms in nurses and 12.4% in office workers. Conclusion. The results of this study concluded that work stress of nurses is higher than that of office workers and work stress affects the obsessive-compulsive symptoms in both groups.

Treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Adolescents and Adults with Down Syndrome: Results from a Scoping Rapid Review.

Adolescents and adults with Down syndrome are noted to display symptoms and behaviors consistent with a diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. While evidenced-based interventions, including psychopharmacology and therapeutic interventions including exposure and response prevention, exist and effectively treat obsessive-compulsive symptoms in neurotypical populations, less is known about effective treatments for similar presentations in persons with Down syndrome. A scoping rapid review was conducted in April 2023 to determine what treatments are being used to target obsessive-compulsive symptoms and related behaviors in adolescents and adults with Down syndrome, the quality of those treatments, and their alignment with current evidenced-based interventions. A total of eleven articles, all single case or case series, published between 1992 and 2017 were identified describing the treatment of 32 adolescents and adults with Down syndrome and obsessive-compulsive traits and behaviors including: hoarding, cleaning, gross motor compulsions, and food, hygiene, dressing, and checking rituals. Interventions used most often aligned with evidenced-based guidelines for treating obsessive compulsive disorder and included psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and complementary and alternative medicine. While the outcomes of most interventions yielded partial or significant reduction in symptoms, poor research quality and limited generalizability noted across all studies make it difficult to inform guidelines for caring for this high-needs population. In the future, we believe it is necessary to perform more rigorous research focused on treating obsessive compulsive symptoms in individuals with Down syndrome with sufficient follow-up to fully assess treatment effectiveness.

Influence of Clinical and Psychosocial Factors on the Adherence to Topical Treatment in Psoriasis.

(1) Background: Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease with different manifestations, affecting the quality of life at social, emotional, and professional dimensions and requiring long-term treatment. This study aimed to investigate the effect of psychosocial and clinical factors on adherence to topical treatment in psoriasis. (2) Methods: Self-reported measures and weighing the medicines were used to assess adherence. Psychopathological symptoms were measured using the Brief Symptoms Inventory (BSI). Social and clinical factors were assessed by a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire. Adherence to treatment with topical medication was assessed using a sample of 102 psoriasis patients. (3) Results: The explanatory models of adherence to topical treatment in psoriasis translated into positive associations between adherence and the education level (higher education) (p = 0.03; φ = 0.23), the single-family household (p = 0.01; φ = 0.44), active employment status (p = 0.05; φ = -0.19), familiar history of psoriasis (p = 0.04; φ = -0.21), and the presence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (p = 0.01; d = 0.29). (4) Conclusions: In patients who present the characteristics identified that influence non-adherence, instructions should be reinforced to increase adherence. The experimental mortality (39.6%) reduced the sample size, representing a limitation of the study.

The contribution of inferential confusion and fear of self to psychological models of obsessive-compulsive symptoms: A dimensional approach

Current psychological models of obsessive-compulsive disorder account for a surprisingly small degree of variability in obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms in statistical models. The current study examined whether constructs from the inference-based approach to OCD (i.e., inferential confusion and fear of self) explain OC symptom dimensions above and beyond what is explained by the prevailing cognitive appraisal model. Undergraduate participants (N = 339) completed a battery of self-report questionnaires assessing OC symptoms, obsessive beliefs, inferential confusion, and fear of self. Results revealed that both psychological models together accounted for about one quarter of the variance in OC symptoms. The inference-based approach concepts most closely aligned with responsibility, symmetry, and unacceptable thoughts, and added explanatory value to appraisal models of these symptom domains. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

A mobile app to challenge obsessional beliefs in adolescents: a protocol of a two-armed, parallel randomized controlled trial

BackgroundAdolescence is a crucial stage for the development of OCD symptoms that, in most cases, persist into adulthood. This requires designing preventive strategies tailored to this population. Therefore, we aim to describe the study protocol that will be used to examine the effectiveness of a mobile health application to challenge obsessional beliefs in adolescents.MethodsA two-armed randomized controlled trial will be conducted on an adolescent sample from the general population. The experimental group will use the intervention module (GGOC-AD) of a mobile app on the GGtude platform for 14 days whereas the control group will use a non-active module (GGN-AD) of said app. Primary outcome measures will be obsessional beliefs and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and secondary measures will be self-esteem and emotional symptoms. Three assessment points will be conducted at baseline, post-intervention, and one-month follow-up. A linear multiple regression model with an intention to treat approach will be used. The expected total sample size will be 55 participants.DiscussionWe expect that the intervention group will show a reduction in obsessional beliefs and OCD-symptoms at post and follow-up in comparison with the control group. Additionally, we expect that the app will improve participants’ self-esteem. This study could provide an accessible mobile health tool to prevent OCD-related symptoms in adolescents.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT06033391. The Effects of Metacognition on Social Functioning in Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of metacognitive beliefs and thought-control strategies on social functioning and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The cross-sectional study sample consisted of 62 patients diagnosed with OCD and 58 healthy controls. OCD was determined by detailed mental examination and the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) was applied. All the participants completed the Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), Thought Control Questionnaire (TCQ), Social Functioning Scale (SFS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). There was no statistically significant difference in terms of age, gender, education, or marital status between the patients and the healthy control group ( P &gt; 0.05). The MCQ-30 total and subgroups scores except positive belief, BDI, and BAI of patients with OCD were statistically higher than healthy controls. SFS total and the subgroup scores of patients with OCD were statistically lower than healthy controls. The results revealed that metacognition was associated with obsessive-compulsive symptom severity and social functioning; social functioning was affected by all of the symptoms but mainly by depression. Handling metacognition and depressive symptoms may be useful for increasing social functioning of patients with OCD. More studies in the future should consider the results. Efficacy of deep brain stimulation for Tourette syndrome and its comorbidities: A meta-analysis

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics, often accompanied by comorbid disorders. Optional treatments for patients with TS include behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, and neurostimulation techniques. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been considered a therapeutic approach for refractory TS and its comorbid symptoms. However, systematic comparison is necessary to understand the therapeutic effect of DBS among patients with TS with various comorbid symptoms, demographic characteristics, or stimulation targets. Consequently, our research aimed to assess the clinical efficacy of DBS in alleviating the symptoms of TS and its comorbidities. A systematic literature search was conducted across five databases: PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO. The primary outcome was the mean change in the global score of the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS), which assesses the severity of tics. The secondary outcomes included mean improvement of comorbid symptoms, such as obsessive-compulsive behaviors (OCB), depression symptoms and anxiety symptoms. In total, 51 studies with 673 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, the DBS led to a significant improvement in tic symptoms (p ​< ​0.001), as well as the comorbid obsessive-compulsive, depression, and anxiety symptoms with effect sizes of 1.88, 0.88, 1.04, and 0.76 accordingly. In the subgroup analysis, we found that striatum stimulation led to a more significant improvement in OCB in patients with TS compared to that observed with thalamic stimulation (p ​= ​0.017). The relationship between sex, age, and target with the improvement of tics, depression, and anxiety was not statistically significant (p ​= ​0.923, 0.438, 0.591 for different male proportions; p ​= ​0.463, 0.425, 0.105 for different age groups; p ​= ​0.619, 0.113, 0.053 for different targets). In conclusion, DBS is an efficient treatment option for TS, as well as the comorbid OCB, depression symptoms, and anxiety symptoms. It is important to highlight that stimulating the striatum is more effective in managing obsessive-compulsive symptoms compared to stimulating the thalamus.

"Terminal anorexia nervosa" may not be terminal: An empirical evaluation.

Gaudiani et al. (2022) presented terminal anorexia nervosa (T-AN) as a potential new specifier to the anorexia nervosa (AN) diagnosis, with criteria including (a) AN diagnosis, (b) age > 30 years, (c) previously participated in high-quality care, and (d) the clear, consistent determination by a patient with decision-making capacity that additional treatment would be futile, knowing death will result. This study's purpose was to empirically examine a subgroup of participants with AN who met the first three criteria of T-AN-and a smaller subset who also met a proxy index of the fourth criterion involving death (TD-AN)-and compare them to an adult "not terminal" anorexia nervosa (NT-AN) group and to a "not terminal" subset 30 years of age or older (NTO-AN). Patients at U.S. eating disorder treatment facilities (N = 782; T-AN: n = 51, TD-AN: n = 16, NT-AN: n = 731, NTO-AN: n = 133), all of whom met criteria for a current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition diagnosis of AN, were compared regarding admission, discharge, and changes from admission to discharge on physiological indices (i.e., white blood cell counts, albumin levels, aspartate aminotransferase levels, and body mass index), as well as self-report measures (i.e., eating disorder, depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms). In contrast to the tight syndromal symptom interconnections of, and inevitable spiral toward death expected for, a terminal diagnosis, results suggest substantial variability within the T-AN group and TD-AN subset, and an overall trend of improvement across physiological and self-report measures. 482 Identification of Candidate Neural Biomarkers of Obsessive-compulsive Symptom Intensity and Response to DBS

INTRODUCTION: Despite the success of DBS for the treatment of refractory OCD, there are currently no robust neural signatures for obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms or initial mood and energy improvements associated with DBS. This gap may be due to limited opportunities available for conducting intracranial electrophysiological recordings during natural symptom fluctuations. Recently available DBS platforms offer a way over this hurdle, allowing for streaming of intracranial local field potentials (LFP) at home and in the clinic. METHODS: We conducted longitudinal intracranial recordings in 10 patients with refractory OCD implanted with recording-capable DBS devices targeted to ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS). Five of the 10 were additionally implanted with ECoG strip electrodes over the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). We captured LFP at home during naturalistic exposures to OCD triggers and in the clinic during variations in stimulation amplitude. RESULTS: All 5 participants who have completed the study so far are clinical responders to DBS therapy. Using the intracranial data collected during OCD exposures, we identified low delta-band power as a candidate neural biomarker of OC symptom intensity during symptom provocations (left VC/VS: R = -0.59, p = 0.01; right VC/VS: R = -0.56, p = 0.04). Electrophysiological analysis of acute response to stimulation revealed a narrow band increase in 30 Hz power specific to lateral OFC that was associated with increased talkativeness and approach behaviors that are typical harbingers of clinical response CONCLUSIONS: These signals have potential utility for classification of symptom intensity and increased mood and energy to enable adaptive DBS systems for OCD. Our data suggest that the neural biomarkers of these two clinical features might be separable, thus possibly allowing for simultaneous optimization of both.

It is Clean, But it Still Seems Dirty to Me: Implicit and Explicit Truth of Imagined Contamination as an Explanation of Ego-Dystonic Experience of Obsessions

Individuals suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder often experience obsessions as ego-dystonic- knowing that a mental event does not reflect reality but acting as if it does. Imagination has been suggested as an important process involved in this mismatch about the actual truth value of obsessions. Imagining false events has been found to impact spontaneous truth evaluations (implicit truth value; ITV), even when people explicitly acknowledged the imagined event as false (explicit truth value; ETV; Shidlovski et al., 2014). The current study examined discrepancies between ITV and ETV along with effects of imagination and their relationship to obsessive-compulsive contamination symptoms. Sixty-two students, recruited across the range of contamination symptoms, participated in this study. First, a table, at which participants were seated, was cleaned in their presence. Next, in a double-categorization autobiographical implicit association test (aIAT), participants classified true or false autobiographical statements together with ‘clean’ or ‘contaminated’ statements regarding the table. Then, they imagined that the table was contaminated prior to the second aIAT administration. ETV was measured by classifying the statements explicitly as true or false. Imagination was associated with reduced ITV, this association did not depend on symptoms, contrary to our predictions. However, symptoms were associated with elevated ETV evaluations of the contaminated statements. Finally, ETV correlated with ITV only for low symptom participants. This correlation was no longer significant following the imagination induction. In conclusion, individuals with contamination symptoms may be more likely to overweigh their explicit evaluations in the presence of contradictory implicit evaluations, creating a discrepancy. This process may account for ego-dystonic experiences reported by OCD patients.

Psychotic Experiences Questionnaire. Part 1

BACKGROUND: The rationale for the concept of psychotic and psychotic-like experiences, delusions and auditory hallucinations, on the basis of which the Psychotic Experiences Questionnaire was developed.&#x0D; AIM: The purpose of this study is to present the results of testing and validating of a questionnaire that assesses the severity of psychotic experiences. The study aims to determine the content of the experience at different phases of manifestation, including the phase of psychotic-like experiences, as well as metacognitive appraisals of the experience and its relationship to social anxiety.&#x0D; MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample of 122 respondents includes non-clinical and two clinical groups — with symptoms of the affective spectrum and with symptoms of the psychotic spectrum. To assess the convergent validity of the Questionnaire, the Russian-language Symptom Check List-90-Revised was used. Metacognitive appraisals of psychotic experience and the overall severity of social anxiety (“Social Anxiety and Social Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire”) were measured.&#x0D; RESULTS: The structure of the Questionnaire obtained by cluster analysis was verified by confirmatory factor analysis, and optimal agreement between theoretical and empirical models was demonstrated (CFI=0.998; TLI=0.998; SRMR=0.102; RMSEA=0.02; RMSEA p-value=0.986). Three scales and corresponding subscales (six categories) defining the phases of unfolding of psychotic experience were identified. The high reliability and item consistency of the Questionnaire was determined using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Convergent validity was assessed using Pearson correlation analysis of the questionnaire scales with the SCL scales — psychoticism, paranoid ideation and obsessive-compulsive symptoms; reliable and adequate statistical relationships were obtained. The role of social anxiety and metacognitive appraisals of psychotic experiences in their actualisation and maintenance is shown. The conceptualisation of thought the emergence of intrusions, “voices” as a dialogical embodiment of the internalised experience of social defeat in re-expanded inner speech is presented.&#x0D; CONCLUSION: The results of approbation and validation of the questionnaire are presented, and the relationships of the psychotic experiences component with its metacognitive appraisals and social anxiety are described. The concept of psychotic experiences is considered a continuum in which disruptions in the usual controllability of mental processes vary range from mild (objectification of thinking) — to moderate (disturbance of self-perception, intrusive phenomena, including “voices”) — to severe (disturbance of the sense of agency, including command “voices”).

Compulsive sexual behaviour in Iranian married women: Prevalence, sociodemographic, sexual, and psychological predictors across-country.

This study addresses the scarcity of research on Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) in non-Western cultures and women, exploring its prevalence, sociodemographic, sexual history characteristics, and sexual and psychological health factors in Iranian married women. A cross-sectional study involving 772 heterosexual married women was conducted between 2022 and 2023, covering all 31 provinces of Iran. Participants were categorized as CSBD+ (at-risk individuals) and CSBD- (low-risk individuals) based on a pre-established cut-off point of ≥18 by the Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale -7. Depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, self-esteem, sexual distress, sexual satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and sexual dysfunction were assessed as psychological and sexual health variables by standardized scales. The prevalence of CSBD was 3.8% in women. Linear regression analysis showed that lower education, being jobless, substance use, pornography use, paraphilic behaviors, conflict on sex frequency, relationship, orgasm and sexual dissatisfaction, higher sexual arousal, depression, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms were positively associated with CSBD. The univariate analysis, at a stringent significance level of 0.005, mirrored the regression findings. Additionally, women with CSBD+ exhibited lower religiousness and higher anxiety compared to those without CSBD-. Raising awareness of CSBD is crucial for health systems and individuals for better policy-making and help-seeking behavior. Identifying risk factors like substance use presents opportunities for prevention, and the association of CSBD with sexual and mental health variables suggests addressing co-occurring issues for improved treatment outcomes. Recognizing culture and gender-specific sexual and psychological correlates enables targeted and effective treatment approaches.

COVID-19-Related Stressors and Psychophysical Health Conditions among Italian University Students: A Post Pandemic Insight.

This study aims to assess and compare COVID-19-related stressors (relationships and academic life; isolation; and fear of contagion) and psychophysical symptoms reported by 637 university students at three times, i.e., April 2020 (n = 197), April 2021 (n = 200), and April 2022 (n = 240). The impact of COVID-19-related stressors on psychophysical symptoms within each time was also tested. In April 2022, perceived isolation and fear of contagion decreased from the peak registered in April 2021, but stress related to relationships and academic life remained high. An ongoing increase in psychophysical symptoms was found. More than 50% of students reported clinical levels of sleep disorders, depression, psychoticism, and interpersonal sensitivity. In April 2022, students still perceiving stress related to relationships and academic life and isolation were at risk for anxiety, somatization, and sleep disorders. Students still perceiving stress related to fear of contagion were also at risk for depression, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and psychoticism. The findings emphasized the long-lasting effects of COVID-19-related stress on students' psychophysical health. Interventions must aim at supporting students in dealing with the complex post-pandemic adjustment process.

Genome-Wide Association Study of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms including 33,943 individuals from the general population.

While 1-2% of individuals meet the criteria for a clinical diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), many more (~13-38%) experience subclinical obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) during their life. To characterize the genetic underpinnings of OCS and its genetic relationship to OCD, we conducted the largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of parent- or self-reported OCS to date (N = 33,943 with complete phenotypic and genome-wide data), combining the results from seven large-scale population-based cohorts from Sweden, the Netherlands, England, and Canada (including six twin cohorts and one cohort of unrelated individuals). We found no genome-wide significant associations at the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) or gene-level, but a polygenic risk score (PRS) based on the OCD GWAS previously published by the Psychiatric Genetics Consortium (PGC-OCD) was significantly associated with OCS (Pfixed = 3.06 × 10-5). Also, one curated gene set (Mootha Gluconeogenesis) reached Bonferroni-corrected significance (Ngenes = 28, Beta = 0.79, SE = 0.16, Pbon = 0.008). Expression of genes in this set is high at sites of insulin mediated glucose disposal. Dysregulated insulin signaling in the etiology of OCS has been suggested by a previous study describing a genetic overlap of OCS with insulin signaling-related traits in children and adolescents. We report a SNP heritability of 4.1% (P = 0.0044) in the meta-analyzed GWAS, and heritability estimates based on the twin cohorts of 33-43%. Genetic correlation analysis showed that OCS were most strongly associated with OCD (rG = 0.72, p = 0.0007) among all tested psychiatric disorders (N = 11). Of all 97 tested phenotypes, 24 showed a significant genetic correlation with OCS, and 66 traits showed concordant directions of effect with OCS and OCD. OCS have a significant polygenic contribution and share genetic risk with diagnosed OCD, supporting the hypothesis that OCD represents the extreme end of widely distributed OCS in the population.

A closer look: obsessive-compulsive symptoms among intern nurses amidst COVID-19 pandemic

BackgroundThe distinctive circumstances and socio-cultural context in Egypt make it crucial to explore the psychological well-being of intern nurses amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with a specific focus on obsessive-compulsive symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the influence of fear of COVID-19 on obsessive-compulsive symptoms among intern nurses.MethodsA cross-sectional survey involving 375 randomly recruited intern nurses was conducted. Data collected included the Fear of COVID-19 Scale and the Short Version of the Arabic Obsessive-Compulsive Scale.ResultsA significant relationship was found between the fear of COVID-19 and the severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms among the participants (r = 0.472, p = 0.000). A stepwise regression analysis indicated that the fear of COVID-19, living in urban regions, frequency of COVID-19 infection, and increased number of infected family members may contribute to the severity of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms with adjusted R2 value = 27.5%.ConclusionThe findings suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has had significant psychological impacts on newly qualified nurses during their internship training period, including the manifestation of mental health symptoms such as Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms. It was observed that urban residents, intern nurses with recurrent COVID-19 infections, and those with more infected family members exhibited a higher severity of OCS. These findings underscore the need for further research to investigate additional factors that may influence OCS severity.

Beyond the surface: Understanding obsessive symptoms and body perceptions, from shape concerns to fear of blushing

IntroductionRecent reclassifications have expanded the understanding of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders (OCDs), now incorporated into a broader category known as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Related Disorders (OCRDs). This study sought to assess obsessive-compulsive symptoms and body uneasiness among outpatients seeking treatment for Eating Disorders (ED). Additionally, we aimed to explore associations and potential mediation effects between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and body uneasiness. This investigation extended beyond concerns related solely to body shape and weight, encompassing fears associated with specific body components (such as facial features, abdominal region, and limbs) or functions (including sweating, blushing, emitting noises, and releasing odors). MethodsPsychometric assessments included the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R) and the Body Uneasiness Test (BUT). Statistical analyses involved bivariate correlations, linear regression, and mediation analysis to explore the associations and potential mediation effects between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and different manifestations of body uneasiness. ResultsThe sample (N = 210) demonstrated substantial obsessive-compulsive symptoms and notable body discomfort. OCI-R scores positively correlated with various dimensions of body dissatisfaction, including shape, weight, and specific body components or functions. Linear regression revealed significant associations between OCI-R scores and overall body uneasiness (BUT-A) as well as concerns about body components or functions (BUTB). Mediation analysis indicated that BUT-A mediated the relationship between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and BUTB. ConclusionThis study offers new insights into the comprehensive landscape of OCRDs. It specifically emphasizes the association between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and body uneasiness, embracing not only concerns about body shape and weight but also extending to body components and functions.
